We have found out that a small space does not need to prevent you from planting and growing your own vegetables, or even fruits of your choice.
DUF members have been successful in planting herbs, vegetables, other food crops and dwarf varieties of many local fruit trees in small spaces. Kindly see pictures below
Bed preparation
A 1 metre x 1 metre space is good enough to start with. (or even smaller for herbs). You can use waste lumber or cement blocks to make your bed.
Soil preparation
If you want to enrich your soil without adding inorganic chemicals, you can use the formula below to make your soil:
1 part rice hull, 1 part manure, 2 parts black dirt.
Rice hull is available in abundance at the old rice mill in Big Falls (Toledo). A person who practices animal rearing can provide you with manure. Care must be practice when dealing with manure of any kind!
Purchasing seeds
Seeds are sold at Reimers (Ecumenical Drive) and Hummingbird Distributors.
Update to where seeds can be purchased - Prosser, located in Hope Creek Village on CGA compound.
Purchasing plants
Plants can be purchased at Springfield (Hummingbird Highway).
Updates to places where plants can be purchased - Silk Grass Village (along the highways just before entering the village and a little after - before reaching the bridge heading to Hopkins junction). Soil is also sold at both places. Prices range from $8-$15. You can ask for mixed soil, that is, with manure and organic matter already added.
If you are interested, you can also check with DUF members for seedlings or plants. We sometimes produce enough to share with persons who are interested. Check the newer blogs for more information.
