How to create a planting pot using cement and sand
An experiment by Karen & Esieni - started 6:00p.m. October 28, 2020
(inspired by videos seen on YouTube)
Materials
- 2 plastic containers with designs (one should be smaller by an inch at least)
- Cement
- Sand
- Containers for mixing
- Small shovel
- Transparent tape for sealing outside of both containers
Ratio of sand to cement used14 parts sand7 parts cementWater (add to desired consistency)
Sand Cement Mixture (2:1 ratio)
Adding water to mixture
Adding water to pure cement to line the inside of the larger container (this will give a smooth finish to the outside of the pot)
Three one-inch PVC pipe are added for drainage
Filling the sides (between large and small container) to create the shape of the pot
Making sure there are no air bubbles and that the sides are packed properly. Shake often (do this gently)
finished product. 👍
We are leaving this to set for 24 hours minimum.
We will see how it goes. 👀
After 12 hours. Looking good.

After 24 hours
We took the sand from inside the small container. We removed the tape and tried to remove as much of the concrete that was pushing out as possible.
This is how the product looked just before removal of the outside and inside containers.
We were too excited to spend time going long cut. We cut away the containers (we got them from the local store for $3.95 and $2.95)
One thing we did wrong was to fill the space all the way up to the top of the inside container.
This made it difficult to pull out. The top had a grove and some of the concrete lodged unto it.
Yes!
The last part here was to locate the place where the three PVC pipes were inserted at the bottom. This will be a job and a half to do. 😄
We decided to give the top of the pot a design.
Shaping out the top - we put some hibiscus leaves on top.
We will remove these in the morning.
We are proud of our finished product so far.
Do challenge yourselves to try this project.
You can decide on different designs and shapes.
Final product before painting
Colors - White (sides), Green (leaves on top)
Final product after painting.
My herbs are waiting to be placed in their new containers. 👍👍👍
The next step will be for us to transfer a plant into it.
Excited!!!
Extremely great finished product. What a great way to cut down on the expense of buying containers and can serve for years if taken care of properly.
