How to take care of nursery and seedlings

Lesson learned - different seed trays are used to germinate different vegetables. Germination usually takes between 4 to 10 days.

  • Smaller cells can be used for crops like leaf lettuce and Chinese cabbage (these usually stay less than a month in trays).
  • Medium cells can be used for tomatoes, broccoli, and cauliflower (these can stay up to 30 days in the tray)
  • large cells can be used for sweet and hot peppers and Cabbage (these can stay up to 35 days in the tray)
  • Pro-mix is a good soil medium to use for germination

Tips

  • a good visual check to ensure each cell on your tray has a seed is to put the seed on top before inserting it into the soil medium.
  • wet the potting mix before adding the seeds. Water again...not much...after seeds have been added.
  • if you are recycling your soil, treat it with hot water to remove pathogens.
  • You will need to feed your seedlings after 30 days. Application of water and fertilizer is best in the afternoon.
  • Transplanting is also best in the afternoon.
  • You are encouraged to find out the requirements of the plants you want to grow. Kindly do a Google search to learn more about things like the nutrient requirements, soil type, pH, etc.
